Professional Tooth Whitening:

Professional tooth whitening is a relatively inexpensive way to make a dramatic statement.

Take-home teeth whitening is a simple, effective and convenient treatment that may enhance your smile and improve the appearance of your teeth. Our Zoom take-home whitening kits can help lighten the stains and discolorations caused by foods, drinks, tobacco use, medication, poor dental hygiene, age and other factors so that you can once again enjoy the benefits of a brilliant white smile.

Our skilled clinicians will begin by taking an impression of your teeth. This impression will be used to create customized whitening trays. After your trays have been made, we will provide you with a powerful Zoom whitening gel. You may wear your trays when it’s convenient for you, day or night. Over the course of several weeks, you should see noticeable improvement in the color of your teeth.

Dental Bonding:

Dental bonding is a cosmetic procedure wherein composite resin material is used to close spaces between teeth, improve misshapen teeth or restore chipped or cracked teeth.  This is a simple and relatively affordable way to dramatically improve the aesthetic appearance of your smile.

The putty-like resin is color matched to your existing teeth and is then shaped and sculpted by one of our talented dentists. After it hardens, it is trimmed and polished resulting in a lasting restoration and a picture – perfect smile.

Dental Crowns:

Dental crowns are oftentimes used to restore teeth that are badly damaged or decayed; they are also a mainstay in cosmetic dentistry. They greatly improve the appearance of teeth that are cracked, broken or show signs of severe wear due to clenching or grinding.

Dental crowns are long-term, full-coverage restorations that are placed over the existing, prepared tooth. They come in a variety of materials including gold, silver and porcelain. Porcelain is oftentimes preferred as it can be matched beautifully with your existing smile.

Veneers:

Veneers are very thin layers of either composite or porcelain that are bonded to the teeth to provide protection and improve the aesthetic appearance of your smile. Our dentists may recommend veneers to correct several types of smile imperfections:

• Improve the appearance of irregularly shaped teeth

We’ll miss Michelle.  In fact, we already do.  Michelle predates me in this practice, having been here when I merged my practice with Dr. Ken Hornowski in 1996, and so carries with her an incredible amount of institutional memory—that’s something that takes time to replace.  But that’s not all.  Despite the fact that she and I got off to a rocky start, which we ultimately determined was because certain aspects of our personalities are very similar, we developed a wonderful working relationship and friendship that resulted in this control freak trusting her with a great many things.  Again, something that will take time to replace.

Her calm, reserved demeanor masked a fierce determination to make sure patients and staff alike were well-cared for, and if she ever felt any of us fell short in that arena, she let us know…quickly.  Fortunately, I have been able to attract some wonderful new long-timers who are showing the desire and dedication to build the type of relationships with me, the staff, and our patients, that Michelle had.  It was important to Michelle to feel that she is leaving us in good hands, and I believe she has.  I know this makes her very happy.

For now, I’ve lost the perfect foil to my devilish tricks—a more gullible Pollyanna you’ll never find—but in time, I know I will.  In fact, I’ve already identified a few in the office (tee hee hee!).

Our latest, greatest addition is Sue Parker, a 27-year veteran of the dental profession, from Savannah, Georgia.  Sue has essentially worked in only two dental offices in that time, so we feel pretty confident she’ll be another one of our new long-timers.  She brings with her an extensive background in dentistry, and has slipped seamlessly into our office dynamic.

Sue loves animals—she has two dogs [Xoloitzcuintles (what?!), or, Mexican Hairless’] and two cats—rescues.  She also has two children and two grandchildren, whom she loves dearly.  Her husband is involved in real estate in Burnsville, and she enjoys travel and reading.  There you have it!  Sue says she loves people and seeing what dentistry can do to improve someone’s life.  We think she’ll fit right in!

I’m so happy to have someone like Rebecca in my office.  Working mostly as one of my dental assistants, but having willfully jumped into help wherever help is needed—front office and in back—over the last 15 years, Rebecca has developed a holistic understanding of our entire office and a skill set wherein I can trust her with virtually anything that doesn’t require special licensure.  Now, THAT’S impressive!

She also has a mind like a steel trap, and an extensive long-term memory to boot (that has both good and bad connotations!).  If we ever need to remember anything about a patient or office occurrence, we ask Rebecca.  She always seems to have it right.  And although I wouldn’t say she quietly goes about her business (that word is not in her vocabulary), she does go about her business very competently and with a warm, positive energy that our patients just love, which just brings more value to our practice.  She’s always at work on time, never misses a day, and is always—always—ready to help me when needed.  I think that’s called perfection.

Rebecca is a friend to all, and always has an easy laugh, which is something I appreciate as a non-reformed wiseacre.  As I say, I’m happy to have her in our office, so much so that I’m honored to reward her friendship and loyalty with a nice diamond tennis bracelet.  I really don’t know what I’ve done to deserve a co-worker like Rebecca, but I thank my lucky stars every day that she’s part of our team, and am happy to tell her so.  Thank you, Rebecca!

Dr. Peterson was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and that, coupled with growing up with three brothers, has made her a die-hard Steelers fan.  After two years at Boston University, she transferred and graduated from University of Pittsburgh, then led the way for Pitt to come to the ACC by going south to dental school at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA.  She says she “fell in love with the South” there and was below the Mason-Dixon Line to stay!  After a fun trip to Lake Lure, she decided go even further south and complete a one-year dental residency in our lovely Asheville.

During the year of residency, Dr. Peterson met a local firefighter/boarding kennel owner, Joe, from Hendersonville.  Through their shared love of dogs and the outdoors, they developed a strong relationship and were married two years later.  Now, two more years later, they are expecting their first child in October!  Yes, spending time with their dogs, Bailey, a Blue-Heeler, and Scotch, a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, and hiking, camping, and mountain biking will take a backseat for a little while!  Dr. Peterson has been active in adult co-ed soccer in Asheville and hopes to get back into playing shape after the baby comes.  Most recently, she has been busy helping Joe completely renovate their home in Hendersonville.  Pregnancy hasn’t slowed her down too much–at 7 months pregnant she was able to help her husband lay down a hardwood floor!

It was a poignant, bittersweet moment:  With one last hug and a goodbye, our family dynamic changed once again. Tearing up as I told him how proud I was of him and the young man he has become, I held on just a little longer than usual with this last hug as I verbally said goodbye, but emotionally said farewell to the boy I’ve tried so hard to nurture, guide, and otherwise be there to catch when he falls for the last 18 years.  Good, bittersweet tears.

But I don’t worry about Matthew.  I’ve watched him time and time again make things happen, apply common sense and creativity into everything he does, and always–always–find the silver linings in life.  I also rest easy because he leaves clues as to how he’ll handle this new frontier.  Although he wasn’t leaving until 9:30 this morning, when I got home last evening, here is what greeted me at the door: completely packed and ready to take on his new life.

They say the apple doesn’t fall very far from the tree.  If I’m the tree for this good apple, then I guess I’ve done okay.  Your dad is very proud of you, Matthew.  Very proud, indeed.

He carries her away, further west, where she alights briefly at WCU to attain a Master’s in Teaching, and begins a career in education, teaching young children the rudiments of art, perhaps inspiring some to become artists themselves.  But, alas, there are storm clouds brewing on the horizon, and events occur in her profession which cause this youthful teacher to call into question her future prospects, ultimately leading her to cast off for other adventures.  Now, fast forward just a few years, and we arrive in the present, wherein a young Whitney Lanier has gained further education and licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist and descends, very Mary Poppins-like, into my practice, with leftover glitter wafting about in her wake.

Whitney has called Asheville home since 2007 and states that she loves the rich arts community and being in such a beautiful place as WNC.  Some of her likes include Asheville’s amazing art deco architecture; dinner with friends; traveling and photographing what she finds (recent destinations include Croatia, Colorado, and Highlands, NC); singing, but only in big groups (she’s too shy to sing in front of people!); family reunions in Bryson City with her grandmother’s siblings.

Her hobbies include hiking with her husband, Jay, and very energetic German Wirehair puppy, Sidney; photography (a new interest); painting; reading (Whitney relays that she is always reading more than one book at a time).  Favorites include: The Elegance of a Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery, The Mistborn Series by Brandon Sanderson, and Colum McCann’s Let the Great World Spin.  A true Asheville cosmopolitan, her favorite weekend activities involve ambling around downtown, writing in coffee shops and gallery hopping.  Of special interest to our patients, Whitney loves learning about each patient and creating a nurturing atmosphere in the dental office.  I think we’ve found a wonderful addition to our office!

We’re so happy to have Whitney in our practice family, and look forward to introducing her to all of our wonderful patients.  Thanks, Whitney, for making us a part of the next chapter of your life of interesting events!
